Google remains the most important source of readers for news websites, at least regarding desktop traffic. This was confirmed by an analysis from LSP Digital.

According to the figures, the share of search engine traffic of big German news portals is between 11 percent (Bild.de) and 37 percent (Focus.de). The social media share, in comparison, is between 6 percent (Spiegel.de) and 14 percent (Focus.de). Google makes up 97 percent of search engine traffic, and Facebook up to 96 percent of social media traffic. Other studies indicate that social networks for media websites are the more important traffic providers. This is suggested by current figures compiled by New York analysts Parse.ly.
